About the Radiography Program

Our Radiography associate degree program is designed to prepare you for an entry-level career as a radiologic technologist in approximately 24 months. Through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on lab work and clinical externships, you will build the imaging skills and patient care techniques needed to work confidently alongside physicians from day one. This program covers essential topics, including anatomy and physiology, radiographic positioning and examination techniques, radiation safety and protection, medical law and ethics and methods of patient care.

Upon graduation, you will be prepared to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam, the nationally recognized credential required by most employers and states.

Where the Radiography Associate Degree Program Can Take You

Certification

Graduates are eligible to apply to sit for the Registered Technologist in Radiography (R.T.(R)) certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Students take RAD 299, a dedicated ARRT review course.*

Entry-level roles

Radiologic technologist, X-ray technologist, or other specialty roles in hospitals, physicians' offices, clinics, diagnostic imaging centers and outpatient care centers.

Career advancement

After passing the ARRT registry exam, techs can pursue additional training in specialty modalities such as ultrasound, sonography, CT, mammography, cardiovascular imaging, nuclear medicine or radiation therapy.

*Certification and state registration requirements vary.

Core Skills You’ll Develop

POSITIONING

Accurately positioning patients to produce quality diagnostic images

IMAGING

Applying radiographic techniques and exposure principles to capture clear diagnostic images

SAFETY

Practicing radiation safety and protection protocols for patients and staff

ANATOMY

Applying anatomy and physiology knowledge to imaging exams

PATHOLOGY

Recognizing pathological conditions that appear in diagnostic images

PATIENT CARE

Delivering professional, compassionate care throughout exams

Program Objective

To develop in students the personal and professional skills needed to perform as competent entry-level radiologic technologists. Students will be presented with information in anatomy and physiology, methods of patient care, medical terminology, radiographic techniques, and communications.

Hybrid Learning Options

For students who need more flexibility in their schedules, hybrid learning options are available at select campuses. Hybrid learning combines in-person instruction with online learning. Students can engage with course materials at times and in environments that suit their individual circumstances, such as balancing employment, family responsibilities or geographic constraints. However, externship hours must be completed entirely in person because hands-on clinical experience is essential for developing the practical skills and confidence needed for real-world patient care.

*Not all programs offer hybrid learning options; Hybrid education options not available at all campuses

FAQs About our Radiography Associate Degree Program

A radiologic technologist, also known as a radiographer, is a trained health care professional who performs diagnostic medical imaging examinations that assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Radiologic technologists work directly with patients, preparing them for procedures, operating imaging equipment and evaluating images before physician review. They serve as an essential link between patients and the physicians who rely on imaging to make informed care decisions.
A radiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in interpreting diagnostic images and making clinical diagnoses. Radiologists complete medical school, a residency and additional fellowship training before practicing. A radiologic technologist, by contrast, is the health care professional who operates the imaging equipment, positions patients and performs the examinations that radiologists then review. While both roles are essential to the diagnostic imaging process, they require different levels of education and serve distinct functions within a medical team.
The two terms refer to the same role. Radiologic technologist is the formal professional title, while X-ray technologist is a commonly used shorthand in everyday conversation and some job postings. Both describe a health care professional who performs diagnostic imaging examinations, operates imaging equipment and works alongside physicians to support patient care. Pima Medical’s Radiography associate degree program prepares graduates for positions listed under either title.

Radiography uses X-ray technology to produce diagnostic images of bones, organs and internal structures. It is one of several imaging disciplines within the broader medical imaging field. Sonography uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize soft tissue and organs in real time, while MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images, particularly of soft tissue.

Pima Medical’s Radiography associate degree program introduces students to multiple imaging modalities as part of their clinical education and is designed to prepare graduates specifically for entry-level practice as a radiologic technologist. Students interested in sonography as a career path can learn more on our Associate Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography program page.

The Radiography Program covers a broad range of clinical and technical topics, including anatomy and physiology, radiographic positioning and examination techniques, radiation safety and protection, pathology, image quality and analysis, medical law and ethics, and methods of patient care. Students train on equipment that mirrors real-world settings, giving them the hands-on confidence needed to accurately position patients, administer examinations and perform imaging procedures from day one on the job.
Graduates of Pima Medical’s Radiography associate degree program are eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Radiography Certification Exam. Passing this exam earns you the RT(R) credential, the most widely recognized certification for radiologic technologists in the country. Most employers and states require or prefer this credential for employment. Our medical career specialists can walk you through your specific state’s requirements and what to expect after graduation.
Yes. Pima Medical Institute participates in federal financial aid programs. Eligible students may qualify for federal grants, federal student loans or other forms of assistance. The first step is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA. Visit our Financial Aid Programs page to learn more or contact your campus financial aid team directly to discuss your options.
Pima Medical Institute generally requires applicants to hold a high school diploma or GED. The Radiography Program may have additional requirements specific to the program and campus.
